Iowa City Swedish Club
Annual Smorgåsbord och Lucia Fest
2018
The Smorgasbord and Lucia fest is a combination or hybrid of two modern Scandanavian traditions; The Julbord and the St. Lucia celebration. However, since our "Julbord" is closer to the Minnesota Smorgasbord, it is more like a combination of "Potluck" and the family celebration of Lucia Dag with the children distributing pepparkakor and Lussekatter.
The Iowa City Swedish Club is holding its annual St. Lucia celebration at the Celebration Farm, 14 Robin Woods Lane NE, Iowa City on Sunday, December 9, 2018. The Fest will begin at 5:00 p.m. and will end by 10 p.m. There is plenty of parking in the parking lot adjacent to the barns. The barns are located on the left side of Route 1 (driving north), 4 miles north of the I-80 interchange. We will be using the Timber Frame Building. A website describing the Celebration Farm may be found at:

This event is a celebration with a combination of three essential Swedish traditions: The Julbord or Smorgåsbord, musical entertainment and the arrival of St. Lucia and her attendants. Thus we celebrate the winter solstice and the changing of the day from darkness to light: from the darkness of winter to the joy of spring and summer.
What to bring: In order to have adequate food for all in attendance, members and guests alike are asked to bring a dish to share that will serve 8-12 people. Swedish meatballs, Potatis Korv (potato sausage), Sylta (pork, veal, & beef), smoked salmon, and scalloped potatoes are just some of the dishes enjoyed in past years. Other suggestions are salad or vegetable dishes, desserts, rye bread, or a beloved Swedish family recipe. Please remember to bring your own table service - plates and silverware! It is necessary to bring serving utensils for shared dishes This year the club will be supplying the Ham (provided by the club), in addition to coffee, glögg, barnaglögg (non-alcoholic) and water.
The musical program: The music program: Jeff Carlson is arranging the music program.
St Lucia and attendants:The Sankta Lucia ceremony and music program will follow dinner. The highlight of the evening will be the arrival of St. Lucia and her attendants bearing lussekatter and pepparkakor.
To make a reservation: Please RSVP to Barbara Grenier (wabgrenier@gmail.com) 309-781-6474) by Sunday, December 2 for your reservation.
Charge for attendance: Each household attending the Lucia is requested to pay $10 to help cover the costs of the use of the Timber Frame building. Guests may be invited: the first guest is free and the charge for each additional guest will be $5 per adult.
